In drought-stricken California, maintaining your lawn is frowned upon — just look up #droughtshaming on Twitter. This trend is a contrast from what the lawn has meant to many Americans for years.
Across the nation, many towns have grass length laws or other policies that require owners to keep their lawns tidy. Lawns symbolize structure, a sense of togetherness with neighbors, and, according to The Atlantic, the American Dream.
“For much of American history, the healthy lawn—green, lush, neatly shorn—has been a symbol not just of prosperity, individual and communal, but of something deeper: shared ideals, collective responsibility, the assorted conveniences of conformity,” the piece says.
