Custom Home Starts Rise Slightly Compared To Last Year

Aug. 18, 2016

The number of second quarter 2016 custom home starts, 47,000, narrowly edged out the amount of custom home starts from the same time last year, 45,000.

The numbers come from NAHB’s analysis of Census Data from the Quarterly Starts and Completions by Purpose and Design survey. A custom home is defined as a home built on an owner’s land, with either the owner or a builder acting as the general contractor.

Nearly 167,000 total custom single-family homes were built over the last four quarters.

“The market share for custom home building will likely experience ups and downs in the quarters ahead as the overall single-family construction market expands,” NAHB’s Robert Dietz wrote. “Recent declines in market share are due to an acceleration in overall single-family construction.”
