The rise of autonomous vehicles in the coming years could lead to a new wave of urban sprawl.
According to Curbed, city planners, transportation officials, and developers are starting to examine how driverless cars may reshape real estate, roadway design, development, and city planning. For instance, less space will be needed for parking, and more efficient commutes may encourage people to move farther away from city centers.
New land-use rules and traffic codes will need to be designed to properly funnel AV traffic and prevent what could be a series of bottlenecks on the road, especially during rush hours, as people get to and from work and school.
