Go North To Find The Nation’s Best States

Whether buyers are looking at New England, the Upper Midwest, or the Pacific Northwest, they are certain to find a home in a good state.

U.S. News and World Report ranked the nation’s 50 states, factoring in metrics on healthcare, crime, infrastructure, education, economy, and government. Northern states dominated: Massachusetts finished first, followed by New Hampshire, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Washington.

Massachusetts ranked first in education and New Hampshire was first in opportunity.

More weight was accorded to some state measures than others, based on a survey of what matters most to people. Health care and education were weighted most heavily. Then came the opportunity states offer their citizens, their crime & corrections and infrastructure.

New Mexico, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana finished in the bottom five. Hawaii, first in healthcare, was ranked 27th.
