For years, big and showy McMansions were a symbol of homeowners living beyond their means. The recession slowed construction, but according to the Washington Post, the ostentatious homes are making a comeback.
Per data from Zillow, construction of McMansions (defined broadly here as homes built after 1980s, with between 3,000 and 5,000 square feet, and located in neighborhoods with similar size lots and homes) has been rising since 2009.
Cheap energy costs and the need for more space has driven many younger adult buyers to the suburbs, and toward McMansions.
