Can a Small Footprint Reverse a Housing Crisis?
A Baltimore nonprofit is piloting a program to build tiny homes for low-wage workers.
Citylab reports that Civic Works intends to keep these homes affordable at between $50,000 to $60,000, and would-be buyers could find financing from banks that issue Recreational Vehicle Industry Association loans if they can’t quality for traditional bank loans. The pilot also would be accompanied by federally-funded training that would help young adults earn their GED by learning a construction trade. Yet the effort could get the cold shoulder from the local housing authority, which has been reticent to support affordable, sustainable housing.
