Top-Earning Women Don’t Make As Much Money As Top-Earning Men

Among the top 2 percent of earners in the U.S., the average woman makes 39 cents for every dollar a man makes, according to the 2015 American Community Survey from Job Search Intelligence.

Business Insider reports that occupation, industry, and tenure are the key causes of the discrepancy. Women are often underrepresented in the top leadership roles.

Missing out on management opportunities has a compounding effect. Executive search firm Spencer Stuart found that 90% of new CEOs of S&P 500 companies were promoted from within the company's ranks in 2016. Of the 58 new chief executives last year, only four — a measly 7% — were women.
