Even eco-friendly buildings can be impacted by indoor air pollution, according to a study by Silent Spring Institute.
The sources of indoor air toxins are chemicals leaching out of building materials and personal items that people bring into their homes. Researchers tested for nearly 100 chemicals including phthalates, flame retardants, pesticides, antimicrobials, fragrances, formaldehyde, and chlorinated solvents. One researcher said that green building standards should be broadened to eliminate the use of hazardous chemicals that contribute to indoor air pollution.
