Housing counseling: Help or hindrance for borrowers?

Borrowers pursuing a home loan must decide whether or not to seek housing counseling, a move being hotly debated in many circles.

Some evidence suggests that housing counseling with a third party does improve loan performance, and the Federal Housing Administration is on the verge of launching a pilot program to incentivize borrowers. Opponents, however, say that more effective measures are available.
