New safety regulations in Minnesota will reduce the size of residential solar installations by at least 20 percent, according to a solar industry group. The state’s new building code says that solar panels cannot be placed within three feet of the edge of roofs.
Other requirements, such as one that mandates three-foot pathways between arrays to provide access for firefighters and emergency personnel, could also shrink available space for photovoltaic panels. The new standard follows the most recent guidelines developed by the International Residential Code Council.
