Mississippi Is Home To The Most Affordable Beach Towns

January 18, 2017

With a short coastline along the Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi isn’t really known for its sandy beaches. Maybe that’s why houses near the ocean are available at a good price.

SmartAsset ranked the most affordable beach towns and found that four Mississippi cities cracked the top 10. Gulfport came in first, with a median home value of $117,300 and an average property tax of $926. Other highly regarded Mississippi havens include Biloxi, Ocean Springs, and Bay St. Louis, which are all within 30 miles of each other and have casinos, golf courses, and other attractions nearby.

Pensacola, Fla., Port Arthur, Texas, and Daytona Beach, Fla., were among the other 10 most affordable beach towns. The rankings were based on factors such as median home value, the median annual amount of housing costs, and the median number of rooms per house.

Daytona Beach is a popular destination for travelers during spring break and racecar fans eager to watch the Daytona 500. Buying a home in the area may not be a bad idea, especially if you need a place to escape to during the cold winter months. The median home value in Daytona Beach is $112,000.
