A common life tip is to keep $1,000 in the bank for emergency purposes, if possible. Some people struggle with that, while others have even more socked away.

CNBC found the 13 states with the largest percentage of residents with savings.

Vermont topped the list, as 83 percent of residents have a savings account. Also, 49 percent of Vermonters have more than a grand saved. The state’s median household income is $59,494.

The rankings are dominated by East Coast states, including New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.
