Through a service called AdWords Express, pre-screened small businesses pay Google to be among the first-ranked search results. Customers then can review the service operators, place a call, and make requests straight from the Google results page, thereby saving time and clicks and not having to leave the Google site.
Amazon introduced a similar feature earlier this year, and start-ups like porch.com and pro.com are gaining a presence. AdWords Express rolled out on Friday in the San Francisco area.
