The International Living Future Institute (ILFI) is sponsoring 25 pilot projects with the goal of creating affordable housing that achieves the Living Building Challenge. The goals are to broadly share the best practices, tools, and resources for achieving the Living Building Challenge in affordable housing.

In addition, ILFI wants to help make incorporation of healthy materials mainstream practice in affordable housing; and collaborate with groups such as National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Fannie Mae, and Enterprise Community Partners to develop policies, programs, and funding mechanisms to bolster sustainability in affordable housing. The program was launched in 2014, and 12 new pilot projects kicked off this year.

The Living Building Challenge has ambitious goals for energy and water efficiency as well as a healthier built environment.
