Elon Musk now says that SolarCity could deliver its solar roof product at a lower cost than a conventional roof even without considering the electricity-generating benefits. When the company first unveiled the product, it said the new solar roof system would cost less after the savings from electric generation were factored into the return on investment. If Musk can follow through on this claim, it could significantly accelerate solar deployment by appealing to homeowners needing a new roof—a market of about 5 million homes every year in the U.S. The end price to the customer of the SolarCity product would vary depending on the difficulty of the installation.
