The first two styles of Tesla’s solar roof product, "black glass smooth" and "textured" glass tiles, will be priced at about $21.85 per square foot, which is cheaper than what was expected
CNBC reports that Consumer Reports had pegged the tiles at $24.50 per square foot. The tiles need to be priced more favorably than traditional asphalt roofs for Tesla to compete.
Two more styles, a curved red “Tuscan” style and tiles that resemble slate rock, are expected for 2018.
The shingles have three layers — a high-efficiency solar cell, a specially designed film to mask the cell from viewers on the ground, and a top layer of tempered glass. Tesla has said it will sell the roof alongside other products, such as its Powerwall wall battery.
