Despite deteriorating affordability in a growing number of housing markets, a few affordable destinations still offer budget-friendly housing options for retirees. Southern markets such as Bermuda Run, N.C., cater to seniors with in-demand community amenities, access to health-care facilities, and affordable housing. Bermuda’s median age is 57 and its median list price has hovered around $179,000 for the last 12 months, Realtor.com reports.

Similarly, Sun City, Ariz., a renowned 55-plus community founded in 1960, has a median age of 72 and a median list price of $309,000. In addition, Sun City is home to diverse recreational activities for those seeking an active retirement lifestyle.

“Yes, people are retiring,” says Amanda Cranfill, a real estate expert in Advance, NC, “but they’re still looking for ways to stay active.”

These communities, some of which have minimum age requirements, often come with added amenities, like pools and golf courses amid pristinely maintained neighborhood grounds.

“It can be like living in a fraternity or sorority again,” says Kathe van Hoften, a Realtor in Orange County, CA. “Everyone knows everyone.”
