After Tesla announced its new, reasonably priced home battery system, proponents of clean energy rejoiced. But as more homeowners strive to get “off the grid,” utility companies are concerned about what comes next for them.

But according to MarketWatch, even off-the-grid homeowners still subscribe to utility services as backup. The grid also acts as a place to sell excess power, which means staying connected is more reliable and economical for many homeowners with their own solar and wind power generators.
