Which Foreign Country’s Residents Are Hunting For Homes In The U.S. The Most?

While Canada still leads the way, the United Kingdom has closed the gap

June 3, 2016

Despite being the second largest country in the world, the population of Canada is not dispersed evenly throughout the territory. It is estimated that at least 75 percent of the Canadian population lives within 100 miles of the U.S. border. It makes sense, then, that because of the country’s proximity to the United States and the country’s residents’ being clustered around the border, that Canada has the largest share of foreign searches for homes for sale in the U.S at 13.8 percent.

As Trulia reports, though, this is not quite as large a share as it used to be. In 2015, Canada accounted for 16.8 percent of all foreign searches, a full 3 percent higher than what has been seen so far in 2016. The United Kingdom is hot on the heels of Canada accounting for 12.1 percent of all foreign searches in 2016, the same share as in 2015. Canada is now just 1.7 percent higher than the United Kingdom.

After Canada, Brazil experienced the largest drop off in its share of searches between 2015 and 2016 as it fell 0.7 percent. India, on the other hand, experienced the largest increase in its share of searches, rising from 2.2 percent in 2015 to 2.8 percent in 2016.

While the majority of foreign searches tend to focus on areas in the United States that are closest to their home countries, there were a few oddities. For example, searchers from Yemen look at for-sale properties in Detroit at 42 times the rate you would expect them to given their national rate. Residents from Zimbabwe looked at properties in Austin at 9 times greater than expected.
