Home prices vary greatly across the U.S., with some areas seeing much more purchasing activity than others. A recent report from real estate marketing platform Realtor.com shows what share of homes located in each ZIP code would be considered attainable based on the typical buyer's budget.

Nationwide, 28% of existing homes would be affordable to buyers with a budget of $250,000, and 58% would be within reach of buyers who are able to spend $418,000.

In which markets are budgets the tightest?

The least affordable ZIP code in the nation is 94027 in Atherton, Calif., where a $10 million budget could afford just 59% of homes there. This is followed by the 33109 ZIP Code, home to Fisher Island, Fla., where a $10 million budget could afford 65% of homes. Additionally, in Aspen, Colo. (81612), a $10 million budget could afford 70% of homes.

Which ZIP Codes are the most affordable?

Two West Virginia ZIP Codes appear at the top of the most affordable rankings. In both Ebert, W.V. (24830) and Squire, W.V. (24884), 100% of homes are available with a budget of just $100,000. In East St. Louis, Ill. (62205), a $100,000 budget could buy 99% of homes in the area.
