A Teacher Crisis Looms over Silicon Valley

Around 86 percent of school-aged children in Santa Clara County attend public school, but many of their teachers can’t afford to live there, The Atlantic reports.

Like the pay of other civil servants elsewhere, a teacher’s wage in Silicon Valley is not market-based, but is based on available state funding, local property taxes, and political will.

Meanwhile, the median price for a home has reached the million marker, and teachers have to commute up to 65 minutes on the area’s congested freeways to find affordable rent.
