Bay Area Bans Wood-Burning Heating in New Homes

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District approved unanimously to ban wood-burning heaters in new homes built in the seven Bay Area counties starting next fall.

The new ruling will also require “every seller of an existing home with a wood-burning fireplace to give buyers a disclosure statement warning of the health risks of wood smoke,” The Contra Costa Times reports.

Backed by scientific medical evidence, district officials say the ultrafine particles from smoke lodges deep in the lungs, triggering asthma and bronchitis attacks and increasing the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
