The 2011-12 year was the first year since 2006-07 when the number of company openings outpaced the number of closings in the housing industry.
NAHB’s Eye on Housing reports on the birth and death data from 2004 to 2012. In the final year of that time frame, 23,808 companies opened, while 21,377 establishments closed. This was a steep change from the nadir in 2008-09, when there were 20,226 births and 40,944 deaths.
Each year, the US Census Bureau releases data showing the openings and closings of companies in various sectors, including home building.
