Urban living has become increasingly popular for younger, more affluent adults, and cities are fighting to accommodate the newcomers while also protecting current residents.

Realtor.com reports that upzoning, where developers pack housing into existing neighborhoods while setting aside a certain portion of space for affordable housing, is driving up rents across the board in many cities, including Seattle.

Studies say that the renter population is growing faster than the rental supply, and that rents were rising faster than incomes in many major metros.
