The New York Times profiles the stories of the Wests, the Applebaums, and the Krasners, three newly retired couples who are contemplating alternatives for their future living situations.

Nearly 70 percent of homeowners aged 65 and older have paid off their mortgage, The New York Times reports. To them, the option of freeing up money by selling their home is an attractive one, allowing them to consider building a new dream home with the profits, drastically change their lifestyle, and travel more.
