The homeownership rate stagnated in Q2-2025 amid ongoing economic challenges. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Housing Vacancy Survey, the homeownership rate was 65% in Q2 2025, which is mostly unchanged from 65.6% year-over-year. Compared with the prior quarter, the homeownership rate was 65.1%.

Likewise, the homeowner vacancy rate of 1.1% was unchanged from the prior quarter but higher than the 0.9% rate in Q2-2024. For the rental market, however, vacancies were much higher.

National vacancy rates in the second quarter 2025 were 7.0 percent for rental housing and 1.1 percent for homeowner housing. The rental vacancy rate was higher than the rate in the second quarter 2024 (6.6 percent) and not statistically different from the rate in the first quarter 2025 (7.1 percent).
