Kitchen Designs Shift From Open Concept to Zoned Layouts
As we make our way into 2027, the residential construction industry is reporting more intentionality in the kitchen. In its 2027 Kitchen Trends Report, the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) surveyed 55,000 remodelers, designers, manufacturers, and architects across North America and found that kitchens are moving away from open floor plans to more deliberate, zoned spaces. Wellness is also becoming a top priority for many clients, with many wanting to improve the light, air, and water quality of their kitchens.
While the kitchen has always been the ‘heart of the home,’ that idea has taken on new meaning. From mudrooms and laundry rooms to back pantries and personalized work zones, the report shows that we’ve entered a new era of what the kitchen can do for homeowners—solving real problems, adding home value, and elevating the way we live.

Kitchens are moving away from open-concept floor plans
Definition in the kitchen is becoming more desirable, with partial walls and operable partitions set to replace fully open concepts in 2027. Intentional zoning was rated "here to stay" by 81% of survey respondents, while semi-enclosed layouts and partially concealed kitchens came in at 46% 41%, respectively.
Dedicated prep space and back kitchens also are growing in popularity, according to the report, with 47% of survey respondents listing them as up-and-coming features for the kitchen.
Wellness is becoming more integrated into the kitchen
Wellness is a trend that’s growing across all areas of the home, and the kitchen is no different. In 2027, the report suggests that more kitchens will be optimized for wellness through better ventilation, water quality, and lighting. Touchless faucets, sound-absorbing materials, and other features that lead to calmer kitchen environments are also becoming more popular.
Climate resilience is also making its way into kitchen design in a bigger way, with 65% of designers agreeing on leak detection systems and automatic shut-off valves, 62% citing backup power solutions as a priority, and 53% pointing to ventilation and air filtration systems.
Calming neutral finishes remain popular
When it comes to the color palette, it seems warm, earthy neutrals are here to stay in 2027. Neutrals remain the top color choice at 96%, with greens and blues following at a respective 83% and 75%. Warmer colors are also growing in popularity, with 43% of respondents citing yellow as a popular color followed by 47% who see reds and burgundies growing in popularity.
