Apparently, the United States and its citizens are attempting to take the ‘Like fine wine’ approach to aging. A recent study by the National Association of Home Builders has shown that there are over 48 million households across the country headed by someone 55-years-old or older. That’s roughly 42 percent of all U.S. households.

Furthermore, there is not a single state with less than 34 percent of households that are considered 55+. Washington, D.C. has the lowest percentage at 34.3 percent whereas West Virginia resides at the high end with 48.3 percent of households being 55+. No state has a higher percentage than 49 percent.

According to Eye on Housing, if the states are broken down to their 3,142 individual counties, 55+ still accounts for over 20 percent of all households across the board.
