New Pittsburgh Development To Have Urban Farm, Mixed Income Housing

Sept. 11, 2017

A new agri-hood project will be situated close to the urban core of Pittsburgh.

Fast Company reports that Hilltop Farm will have mixed income housing and a 23-acre farm with orchards, fields, greenhouses, community gardens, farmers’ markets, and incubator farm plots.

The project intends to attract residents to the St. Clair neighborhood, an area struggling with poverty and vacant lots.

The urban farm will provide food for local residents who are in the middle of a food desert. Locals have little access to fresh produce, and many do not own cars.

A youth farm and orchard, along with an education center, will help introduce students from nearby schools to farming. In the farm incubator space, aspiring farmers who may not have access to land–or who want to learn more about how to run a business–can come to the farm to use a plot of land and access other resources.
