The Midwest was highly represented in the new ranking from Niche, which finds the 50 best suburbs in the nation. Carmel, Ind. was named the best overall.
Carmel, population 86,940, has a median home value of $306,500 and median household income of $106,546. Another suburb of Indianapolis made the cut, Fishers, Ind., with median household income of $97,100, median home value of $225,700, and a population of 85,887, per Business Insider. Both cities have an "A-" safety grade in the ranking. Nearby, Illinois had nine suburbs in the top 50, including Evanston, Hinsdale, Oak Park, Buffalo Grove, and Clarendon Hills, which ranked highest for the Land of Lincoln in third place.
Niche compiled a list of the best suburbs to live in for 2018 and ranked them according to cost of living, school quality, crime rates, home prices, employment, and amenity access, among other measures. Statistics on Niche's list are primarily from the US Census and represent the most recent data. The list measures the overall quality of living in suburban America. Some crime and safety rates were not provided. However, some suburbs on this list are tourist destinations, including Santa Monica and Berkley, California.
