A solar energy initiative launched just days after Hurricane Maria pummeled Puerto Rico was recognized with a Presidential Citation from the National American Institute of Architects and could serve as a model for cities restoring energy infrastructure in response to and preparing for natural disasters.
John Marvel, founder and principal of Marvel Architects, with offices in New York and San Juan, marshaled several solutions through his nonprofit, Resilient Power Puerto Rico, to revitalize the island’s power grid by developing 28 solar micro-grids in 11 municipalities and has funding in place to install 38 more sites in 17 additional municipalities in Puerto Rico.
