Desalination plants are an expensive but logical recommendation for both coastal and non-coastal cities. Another option is to recycle wastewater and stream it back to the drinking water supply like in Los Angeles. One expert suggests changing how cities in the desert are planned and built, relying more on narrow alleys and compact layouts, as well as planting more native plants that require less water.
