How to Deal with Noise in High Density City Living

June 4, 2015

Noise is a major complaint for city residents. According to writer Christine Hunter, mitigating the amount of noise city-dwellers deal with can start as early as the construction process.

“The amount of noise that is transmitted from unit to unit in a multi-family building depends on its structure, the materials used for finishes, the mechanical systems, and the way that the walls between units are built,” writes Planetizen blogger Linda Day, quoting Hunter’s book Ranches, Rowhouses, and Railroad Flats.

Planners also play a role in reducing city noise with codes and standards, and by setting site design guidelines.
