San Diego Commits to Transitioning to 100 Percent Renewable Energy

On Tuesday, San Diego’s City Council voted to transition to exclusively using renewable energy, including wind and solar power, in 20 years. The city intends to cut its greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2035, as the New York Times reports.

To help reach the goals, officials said that they would shift half of the city’s fleet to electric vehicles by 2020. The city will also seek to recycle 98 percent of the methane produced by treatment plants.

Other major cities, including New York City and San Francisco, have vowed to use more renewable energy, but San Diego is the first to make its pledge legally binding.
