Americans’ Savings Are Improving, But Many Still Face Hardships

July 13, 2016

The number of Americans who have saved three months of emergency funds increased to 46 percent in 2015, a 6 percent increase from 2012 and an 11 percent increase from 2009, according to a FINRA Investor Education Foundation survey of more than 27,000 Americans.

Additionally, 62 percent of respondents said they could certainly or probably come up with $2,000 if an unexpected expense arose within the next month, The Wall Street Journal reports. The last time the survey was conducted in 2012, that share was 56 percent. 48 percent of respondents said they had no difficulty covering expenses and paying bills, up from 40 percent in 2012 and 36 percent in 2009.

However, the share of Americans who spent less than their income and had money left over to save declined to 4 percent from previous marks of 41 percent and 42 percent in 2012 and 2009 respectively.
