Over the last two years, Austin, Texas, has found housing for 682 veterans, which has effectively ended veteran homelessness in the city.
The Huffington Post reports that if a veteran becomes homeless, Austin has systems in place to find housing within three months.
Along with $3 million in funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs, Austin has benefitted from a group named the Housing Heroes Fund. It collects money to help cover recently-housed veterans’ rent and pay for property improvements. The fund has raised $373,000 to date.
