A new research brief from the Urban Institute says that second-generation immigrants are the future of the American workforce, and that their labor will help fund Social Security of today’s adults.
CityLab reports that 24 percent of the youth in the U.S. are children of immigrants, and that between 2006 and 2013, the number of kids who have at least one foreign-born parent increased 12 percent.
Over that same time frame, the net growth of second-generation immigrants boomed in Texas, Georgia, and North Carolina.
This is a distinctly urban group: Kids of foreign-born parents much more likely to live in the top 100 U.S. metros (83 percent) compared to children of U.S.-born parents (62 percent), and almost half in live in the 10 major metros, 8 of which are traditional immigrant gateways like Houston and Dallas.
