Compared to the nadir of the housing crisis, home value recovery in swing counties lags behind the solidly Democratic or Republican counties.
A Zillow report found that while Democratic and Republican counties are nearing their pre-crisis peak values (only 4.6 percent and 4.3 percent below), home values in swing counties are 8.8 percent lower than they were during the boom.
A swing county is defined as a county won by both Democratic and Republican presidential candidates during the past three elections.
Median home values are much different for each segment. The median home value in Democratic counties was $250,800 as of July, compared to $179,200 for swing counties, and $148,400 for Republican counties.
A majority of the large urban areas on the coasts are more solidly Democratic, while the vast, largely rural center of the country leans Republican. Critical swing counties are sprinkled throughout the country.
