With reasonable tax rates, cheap insurance costs, and low costs of living, Louisville and Lexington are great for working folks looking to move on to the next stage in life.
The Kentucky cities ranked first and second in SmartAsset’s rankings of the best cities for an early retirement. The list was based on 10 metrics, including average effective incomes, costs of housing and healthcare, and crime rates.
Most of the cities in the top-25 are located in warm climates, including Tampa, Plano, Texas, Mesa, Ariz., Henderson, Nev., and Irvine, Calif. A few expensive markets, including Seattle and Denver, made the cut, as did a few cities with low costs of living, such as Pittsburgh and Fort Wayne, Ind.
Retiring early in a Northeastern city may prove to be difficult, unless you are fairly wealthy. The region is full of some of the most expensive cities in the country. Boston is the highest-ranked Northeastern city at 42nd.
