Not surprisingly, residents of Fremont, San Jose, Oakland, and San Francisco live a healthy lifestyle.
The four California cities took the top spots in SmartAsset’s ranking of the nation’s healthiest cities, based on rates of physical activity, obesity, smoking, excessive drinking, and the percentage of people who have health insurance.
Other healthy cities include Seattle, San Diego, and Boston, along with Albuquerque, N.M., Madison, Wis., and Raleigh, N.C.
Seven of the bottom 10 cities in this study are in the South. Part of the reason is the high obesity rates in the region. Cities like New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Corpus Christi, Texas, for example, have obesity rates in excess of 32%.
