Members of the Longview, Texas city construction board are worried that changes to the building code could price builders out of the city’s market for new homes. State law requires the Longview City Council to adopt updated National Electrical Code standards.
The city’s current codes are three years behind state codes and would be six years' lagging by September when the state adopts 2017 standards. In the past couple of years, the city has adopted several national and international building code updates including the 2015 International Energy Conservation and International Residential codes. A city official estimated that the changes have increased the cost to build a home in Longview by as much as 7%.
