Dark paint colors are currently in vogue. With the announcement of deep-toned Oceanside as Sherwin-Williams' 2018 color of the year, Deep Onyx as Glidden's 2018 color choice, and decorators' stamp of approval, many may seek to incorporate rich hues into their or their clients' homes.
Testing out a small space, and watching how light affects the color is a good way to start; Joa Studholme, Farrow & Ball international color consultant, said to start with a contained space -- “When you arrive, it creates a sense of drama," to Michelle Higgins of The New York Times. The Times further outlined tips for properly using bolder colors.
“Conventional wisdom states that small spaces — especially those facing north — should be lightened to increase the sense of space,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute consultancy. “However, painting trim a lighter color in an area painted with darker hues can actually increase the illusion of space,” she said, because it creates a “greater impression of height or width in the space.”
