According to a Census Bureau survey, 738,000 new single family homes were completed in 2016 at a median sale price of $316,200.
To identify commonalities in newly-built homes, The New York Times put together a chart of pertinent survey data, and reports that 55 percent are in the South (403,000), and 91 percent were built with wood framing material instead of concrete.
Only 3 percent, or about 23,000, of new houses were built in age-restricted communities. Some 93 percent, or 686,000, of homes completed in 2016 had air-conditioning. And nearly as many — 90 percent, or roughly 668,000 — were built in metropolitan areas.
