Almost All Metropolitan Growth is in the Suburbs and Exurbs

Population growth in the suburbs and exurbs is increasing, and the data on migration patterns in the U.S. starting in 2010 suggest this will continue as more and more people move to the suburbs. 

According to data from the 2012 - 2016 American Community Survey, the suburban and exurban share of major metropolitan area population is at 85.5 percent. Since 2010, suburban and exurban growth was 90.5 percent of all population growth, per The New Geography. The growth in the Urban Core accounted for 9.5 percent, falling from its share in the 2010 population, 14.5 percent.

New York is unique in having by far the largest Urban Core in the nation with 10.7 million residents and 53 percent of the metropolitan area population.
