The total of single-family permits issued year-to-date (YTD) in 2018 through May went up 8 percent year-over-year, to 363,327, attributed to large gains in Western states.
Nine out of the 13 Western states had single-family permit growth outpacing the national average, reports the National Association of Home Builders. Overall, 20 states exceeded the national average; the remaining 11 came from the South (seven), the Midwest (three), and New Hampshire. Only two other Northeastern states, New York and Pennsylvania, had single-family permit growth increases during this period.
In the single-family sector, Texas led with 53,293 permits issued year-to-date in May 2018 and Florida came in second with 39,173 during this time. Meanwhile the lowest number came from the District of Columbia with 49 permits. The 10 states issuing the highest number of single-family permits combined accounted for 61.0 percent of the single-family permits issued.
