Areas of California have become too risky for insurance companies to insure due to the persistent threat of wildfires. New data shows that insurers aren’t renewing policies in parts of the state that climate scientists say are likely to be struck by large wildfires in coming years.
Insurance companies dropped more than 340,000 homeowners from wildfire areas over the four years between 2015 and 2018. California’s Insurance Commissioner says that without action to reduce the risk from extreme wildfires and preserve the insurance market communities could “unravel.”
