The number of homes rated on their energy efficiency continues to grow, indicating continued popularity of these ratings. In 2019, 241,909 homes in the United States were HERS-rated compared with 236,116 in 2018. Some 2.7 million homes have been HERS-rated to date.
More than 20 percent of all newly constructed homes are HERS-rated. Home builders increasingly point to energy efficiency as an important selling point for new homes.
A new consumer-facing website launched by RESNET last year has helped to boost public awareness of energy efficiency home ratings. The average HERS Index Score of homes rated in 2019 was 59, or 41 percent more efficient than homes built in 2006 and 71 percent more efficient than a typical home built in 1970.
