The American Society of Interior Designers recently released its 2023 Trends Outlook Report, and while wellness design continues to dominate homeowner preferences, it’s now taking on a more inclusive meaning. Apart from strictly health-conscious design focused on sanitation and hygiene, homeowners are taking a more holistic approach to their well-being, incorporating biophilic elements and retreat spaces, such as home gyms and meditation rooms, into their floor plans.
In addition, the report revealed increased consumer focus on sustainability, with more ethical materials and energy-efficient home features, Forbes reports.
“Physical surroundings have a profound effect on one's mental health,” declared Anna Popov, a Seattle-based interior designer. “It can look amazing, be glamorous, and cost a fortune, but how does it make you feel?” She asked. Popov cited the importance of maximizing natural light in the sometimes gloomy Pacific Northwest. “It is common practice in our firm to evaluate every design early on against very simple criteria: Does this solution allow us to maximize the amount of natural light in the space? If the answer is no, we pretty much automatically drop the idea because there is a better solution out there,” she added.
