Buena Esperanza’s new Spanish hacienda style transformed a drab Econo Lodge motel into attractive, attainable multifamily housing and support services. The renovation included creating office space for the project’s on-site leasing, management, and support services staff.

The new 1,800-square-foot community center provides space for residents to congregate and participate in social and educational activities.

Permeable paving in the courtyard lets rainwater pass through for stormwater management.

The central courtyard includes bike racks and barbecue grills next to a patio. The community also has a garden and laundry facilities.

A two-story addition to the original motel provides additional space that includes a place where residents can meet and use computers.

Tables are available in the community center for activities, games, and shared dining.

The community kitchen has space for cooking together and a pantry that provides household essentials free to residents.

Each studio apartment is fully furnished and includes a private bathroom, a small kitchen, and a living/sleeping area.

In recognition of its success, Buena Esperanza won a Platinum Award and a Community Impact Award in the 2022 Best in American Living Awards (BALA) Multifamily Adaptive Reuse category.
