A report from Attom Data Solutions says Kansas City, Mo. home prices increased 13.4 percent year-over-year. San Jose had 13.3 percent growth.
MarketWatch reports that a major factor in this trend is that migration away from tech hubs on the West Coast, due to the lack of affordable housing and the intense competition among buyers in those housing markets, is speeding up. Attom's data show that the median home price in Kansas City is $172,098, whereas median-priced homes in San Jose cost more than five times that amount.
Many of the cities that witnessed double-digit home price appreciation on a percentage basis over the past year weren’t on the West Coast. This trend is expected to continue into the next year, Attom’s report noted. “Will the markets which were hot in 2017 be hot in 2018? Think of Denver, Austin, Nashville, Raleigh, Grand Rapids, and wherever Amazon elects to locate its second headquarters project, the $5 billion HQ2."
